Temples, temples, temples, temples, temples and temples

Being in Egypt means lots of temples, and I mean a lot. Over the last two days we’ve been in Luxor, to visit six temples.

After disembarking the felucca, we went straight into a day of seeing temples on the way to Luxor.

Temple 1 - Kom Ombo
Our first temple was actually a dual temple, two temples built side by side. One was dedicated to a crocodile god and one to a falcon god. A pretty nice temple.

Temple 2 - Edfu
On to temple number two, which was huge. This temple was a bit newer and was built by the Greeks.

Before heading to the third temple, we headed to our hotel in Luxor to freshen up. This was the best hotel I have ever been to, with views across the Nile.

Temple 3 - Luxor
We went to our third temple of the day at sunset, giving it a magical feel. This temple felt like a level out of Crash Bandicoot or some other video game. It was definitely my favourite temple of all of those that I saw.

Temple 4 - Valley of the Kings
Technically not a temple, but a sacred site where lots of Egyptian tombs are situated, including the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Temple 5 - Hatshepsut
Not my favourite of temples, but an impressive structure built into the mountainside. This isn’t actually the original, it was rebuilt by the Polish.

Temple 6 - Karnak
This was the biggest of all the temples, and contained all of the features of the previous temples in one. There were huge arches, columns and obelisks everywhere. Very impressive.

I’m a bit templed out after all that, but we have no more temples to see on this trip. We’re heading back to Cairo on the night train tonight to do a bit more sightseeing in the capital.
