The Welsh Connection 🏴
I had a huge surprise on our long drive towards Buenos Aires. One of the campsite’s sat opposite where the first Welsh settlers arrived in Argentina, and there was a museum!
Back to the start of our trip up to Buenos Aires, we had crossed back into Argentina from our short time in Chile and headed to a wild campsite just beyond the border. I had never experienced wind like it when trying to set up a tent, so we needed to be a bit more proactive in deciding where to pitch. We eventually found an old volcanic crater to pitch up, now filled in with a lake.
The next day was a very long drive day up to the next wild camp, situated on a beach, and a lot less windy than the night before.
The following day we headed to the town of Puerto Madryn to set up camp for a couple of days, as we would be heading over to the Valdes Peninsula the next day. I had a bit of a shock when we arrived, when I was informed there was a Welsh museum across the road. I knew there were Welsh communities in Argentina, but I wasn’t expecting to see anything.
In the museum, we read the story of how a ship of Welsh travellers set sail from Liverpool and landed exactly where we were camped. They sought shelter in the nearby caves, before finding a more permanent place to stay further south.
The next day we headed to the Valdes Peninsula, where we were treated to beautiful views and animals such as penguins, elephant seals, sea lions and some cute armadillos.
We then continued to head north, camping by a river for the night, before heading into Buenos Aires, where we would spend the next few days.
