Whitsundays fundays

We’ve reached a massive milestone! 100 days on the road. It’s gone way too quickly. To celebrate this milestone, it was straight into another multi day trip to the Whitsundays.

Yet again, before that we had another exciting overnight bus journey from Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach. When the journey is this long, the bus drivers swap over mid way through. When we got to the swap zone, the new driver was nowhere to be seen. It turns out the car they use to swap themselves had been nicked, so we then had to drive to the bus depot half an hour away to pick the driver up, then wait for the police to turn up. As usual with the Australian bus journeys, it’s another dramatic ride.

We arrived in Airlie Beach to some bad news, due to the strong winds, boat trips to the Whitsundays were being cancelled. A lot of people had received emails on the bus to let them know about this, but I hadn’t had anything yet. No news is good news, right.

Everyone scrambled to find out whether their boat trip was going ahead. While most were cancelled, mine was 95% going ahead, which was a relief. Given that the majority of people in Airlie Beach were no longer going on a boat trip, most saw the opportunity to have a few drinks and party.

After a heavy night, it was time to board the boat which would be our home for the next 3 days. 32 people on a small boat, it was going to be fun. We set sail into the strong winds, which made for some interesting sailing. People were sick, thankfully I wasn’t.

We spent most of the first day sailing, with a spot of swimming and jumping off the boat’s dive platform.

The next day, we set sail for the main Whitsunday island. You could tell this island gets a lot of visitors, with one way systems in place for the main viewpoints. As most boats had been cancelled, we mostly got the island to ourselves.

Back onto the boat, we did some snorkelling (my excitement for snorkelling has now gone, there’s only so many times you can do it). We then headed over to a remote island to watch the sunset, which was bloody beautiful.

Finally, it was time for some fun on the boat. We invented what is possibly the best drinking game I have ever played, called Goon Box. I’ll let your imagination run wild with that one.

We set sail back to Airlie Beach the next day with our sore heads. Again, another adventure that was incredible. These multi day adventures are just the most fun thing to do when you go travelling. I look forward to the next one!

Onwards to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef (yay, more snorkelling…).
