Wāndering around Wānaka
Oh Wānaka, you absolute beauty. I’ve spent 5 days in this wonderful town and it’s my favourite place so far in New Zealand.
The first day was a bit damp so we just wandered around the town and sampled some beers. After that it was action packed.
First stop, Mount Iron, a small hill behind the town but with great views over the lake.
Next, it was a 3am wake up call to hike Roy’s Peak to watch the sunrise and boy was it worth it. I only found out after that it’s higher than any of the UK mountains, but the track up was incredibly steep. Quite possibly the best view I’ve had from a mountain (but definitely not the best walk up I’ve had that’s for sure).
Then it was time for skydiving, which you can read all about in the previous post.
Finally, we took out a kayak onto the lake and headed to a small island only accessible by boat.
Other things to mention are the famous Wānaka lonely tree, a fantastic ice cream and this absolutely fantastic view I had from the outdoor tables of the hostel.
Now it’s time for a big old party in Queenstown for the next week.
